Crisis Group: Disarming Non-State Actors Puts Baghdad at a Critical Crossroads

The International Crisis Group (ICG) stated in its latest assessment on Iraq’s political and security landscape that the government faces a critical juncture amid rising security challenges and escalating regional conflicts.

The report underscored growing pressure from Washington and international partners for Baghdad to assert sovereign security authority. This requires verifiable steps toward enforcing the state’s monopoly on firearms and disbanding armed factions, especially as risks grow regarding potential strikes against vital national infrastructure.

ICG concluded that preserving domestic stability requires proactive de-escalation and sustained dialogue with domestic political factions. Such measures are essential to prevent the country from turning into a staging ground for proxy confrontations while securing the international financial and developmental backing necessary for national recovery.
