A research briefing from the UK House of Commons Library outlined the implications of recent security realignments and shifts in northeastern Syria on Iraqi national security.
The briefing warned that operational shifts along Iraq’s western frontier require close military and intelligence coordination by Baghdad to prevent security vacuums. Such voids could otherwise be exploited by ISIS sleeper cells seeking to reactivate cross-border logistical lines and infiltrate Iraqi territory.
The UK Parliamentary paper recommended upgrading border surveillance technology, hardening security installations, and maintaining cross-border communication channels to consolidate gains in liberated provinces and guarantee long-term stability.
